The strongest signal is the pattern. If symptoms arrive around the same time each August and clear after the first frost, that is seasonal allergic rhinitis, and ragweed is the most likely cause across most of the country.

Medication

Antihistamines address itching, sneezing and runny nose. Steroid nasal sprays are generally more effective for congestion and work best started before the season rather than after symptoms build. Eye drops help the symptom people find hardest to ignore. All are available over the counter and all work better as a routine than as a rescue.

Avoidance

Ragweed releases pollen after sunrise, so early morning is the worst time to be outside or to open windows. Shower and change clothes after time outdoors, since pollen rides indoors on hair and fabric. Keep car windows up and use recirculate.

Filtration

The pollen that gets indoors stays airborne until something removes it. Ragweed pollen runs roughly 17 to 23 microns, well inside what HEPA captures. This is the lever that keeps working through the eight hours you spend asleep, which is when exposure does the most damage to how you feel the next day.

Immunotherapy, either allergy shots or under-the-tongue tablets, is the option that changes the underlying sensitivity rather than managing symptoms. It takes months to years and requires a specialist, and for people whose season is genuinely debilitating it is worth discussing with an allergist.

Start with the bedroom

If you only do one thing, do this one. You spend roughly a third of every day in one room with the door closed, which makes it the easiest space to control and the one where control pays the most.

  • Keep the window shut through the season, particularly overnight and in the early morning.
  • Shower before bed rather than in the morning. Otherwise you carry the day's pollen onto the pillow.
  • Keep clothes worn outdoors out of the bedroom. A hamper in the hall or bathroom is enough.
  • Run a correctly sized HEPA purifier continuously. Multiply the room's square footage by two thirds to get the minimum CADR you need. A 200 square foot bedroom needs a CADR of at least 134.
  • Wash bedding weekly in hot water during the season.
