Oransi Air Purifier Reviews
Every independent review of an Oransi air purifier we know about, linked, including the criticisms. Wirecutter, Modern Castle, Vacuum Wars, Live Science, CNET, Forbes, Business Insider, Real Simple, and a Clemson University study, plus what people say on Reddit and YouTube. We have not edited out the parts that are unflattering.
Reading a manufacturer's own summary of its reviews is not a substitute for reading the reviews. Every link on this page opens the original in a new tab.
If you want the laboratory data rather than editorial testing, that is on our air purifier testing page, with the AHAM, Intertek and CARB results and what each of those standards does not measure.
Independent Hands-On Testing
Reviewers who put the machine in a room and measured what happened.
New York Times Wirecutter
Wirecutter tested the AirMend Small Room and measured smoke reduction of 99% on the highest fan speed and 96% on the fourth of seven speeds. They described the design as resembling a compact box fan, noted the housing strength and a filter rated up to 18 months, and recommended it for a dorm room or home workshop.
They also found it is not among the quietest purifiers they have tested at medium and higher speeds, though quiet on lower ones.
Modern Castle
Derek Hales and the Modern Castle team have reviewed five Oransi models over several years, testing with a laser particulate meter. The EJ120, now discontinued, was rated first in its category.

Vacuum Wars
A head-to-head test of the Mod against the Shark HP201 Max, tagged not sponsored, from a channel with a large audience for exactly this kind of comparison.

Live Science
A full review of the AirMend AMD-150H, praising it as a simple appliance that does its job without gimmicks or smart features, at a price they described as wallet-friendly.
BreatheQuality
Clemson University, 2011
Dr. Fred Stutzenberger's team ran an independent comparison of leading air purifiers using sterile agar plates held in front of each unit's exhaust for a timed five minutes, then incubated for three days. The Oransi Max, since discontinued, was the only unit in the test that produced completely clean plates. The others left bacteria, mold spores, pollen or dust.
This is the oldest study on this page and one of the few independent tests in the category prior to COVID.

What People Say on Reddit
Reddit is where product claims get tested by people with no reason to be polite. RedditRecs aggregates those threads by product, including the negative ones.
The recurring themes there are worth naming. People like that the HEPA and carbon units are separate rather than combined, and they cite the carbon weight and the potassium permanganate treatment specifically. The recurring complaints are price, filter replacement cost, and new-filter odor, which we address below.
Where Reviewers Say We Fall Short
Noise at higher speeds. Wirecutter found the AirMend is not among the quietest purifiers they have tested at medium and higher fan speeds, though quiet on lower ones. That is accurate. Our motor is designed for airflow per watt. If you need a purifier that is inaudible at full speed, size up to a larger model and run it lower rather than buying a smaller one and running it flat out.
Price. We are not the cheapest option and focus on performance. A TrueCarbon filter carries over three pounds of carbon.
New filter odor. Covered below. It is real, it is normal, and it goes away.
New Filter Smell: What It Is and How Long It Lasts
A new HEPA filter often has a faint papery smell when you first install it. This comes up in Reddit threads and in customer emails, and it worries people, so it is worth explaining plainly.
HEPA media is made from fine glass and cellulose fibers formed into a paper-like sheet. Like any new paper product, it carries a light odor of its own material. That smell is not a chemical treatment, a coating, or a fault. It is the media itself.
It typically clears within a couple of days of running the unit, faster in a ventilated room. Run the purifier on a higher speed for the first day and open a window if you can. If a smell persists beyond several days, or smells chemical rather than papery, contact us at cs@oransi.com and we will look at it.
Two related notes. Carbon filters are the opposite case: activated carbon adsorbs odors rather than producing them, so a new carbon filter should not smell of anything. And nothing in an Oransi purifier generates ozone, since there is no ionizer, no UV and no plasma stage. Every model is CARB certified for zero ozone emission.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Oransi air purifiers any good?
Independent testing has been consistently positive. Wirecutter measured 99% smoke reduction from the AirMend at its highest fan speed. Modern Castle rated the EJ120 first in its category and has reviewed five Oransi models. CNET named the Mod+ best for pet hair and dust, Business Insider named the TrueCarbon 200C best for odors from more than forty units tested, and Real Simple named the Mod+ best for pets. The most common criticism is noise at higher fan speeds.
Why does my new Oransi filter smell?
HEPA media is a paper-like sheet of fine glass and cellulose fibers, and like any new paper product it has a light odor of its own material. It is normal and it usually clears within a couple of days of running the unit, faster with the window open. It is not a chemical treatment or a fault. If a smell persists beyond several days or smells chemical rather than papery, contact us.
Are Oransi air purifiers loud?
They are quiet on lower to medium speeds like other air purifiers and audible at the top of the range. Wirecutter noted the AirMend is not among the quietest purifiers they have tested at medium and higher speeds. The practical answer is to size up and run lower rather than buying small and running flat out, since CADR is measured at maximum speed and a machine you turn down delivers less than its rating.
Has Oransi been tested by an independent laboratory?
Yes. Every HEPA model is AHAM Verifide for CADR, tested by an independent laboratory and listed in the public directory at ahamverifide.org, which anyone can search. TrueCarbon gas-phase performance was tested by Intertek against AHAM AC-4-2022. That is a certification, though participation is optional and there is no public directory for it, so the result cannot be looked up the way a CADR can. All models are CARB certified for ozone emission. Full detail is on our testing page.
What do Reddit users say about Oransi?
Discussion is mostly positive, with users specifically citing the carbon weight and the separation of HEPA and carbon into different units rather than combining them. The recurring criticisms are price and for some users the new-filter odor. RedditRecs aggregates the threads by product if you want to read them directly.
Which Oransi air purifier is best reviewed?
It depends on the problem. For particles, the AirMend line has the strongest recent coverage, including Wirecutter. For odors and VOCs, the TrueCarbon 200C was Business Insider's top pick from more than forty purifiers tested. For large rooms and pets, the Mod+ has been named a category pick by both CNET and Real Simple.
