Air purifiers sanitize the air of allergens, pollutants, and toxins to improve indoor air quality.

They work by sucking in air, “cleaning” it, and recirculating it.

Air purifiers remove harmful particles from the air you breathe by trapping them in an activated carbon filter or purifying them with a HEPA filter before releasing them.

If you need to remove small particles like pollen, mold, dust, pet dander or wildfire smoke then you want a HEPA filter.

If you need to remove odors, gases, and VOCs then you need a quality carbon filter.

Filters must be changed periodically to keep your air purifier working optimally.

How often you must change your unit’s filter depends on the brand you buy. The most effective air purification systems do not use washable and reusable filters.

Many home air purifiers give a blanket specification for room coverage, which does not help consumers know what to expect.

Before you select the best air purifier for your space, you must first determine your room size.

Take the square footage of your room and multiply it by 2/3.

This will give you the minimum smoke CADR needed.

For example, if your room is 300 sq feet, you need an air purifier with a CADR of 200 (300 x 2/3).

CADR is the gold standard for measuring air purifier performance in the U.S. since 2016. CADR ratings give consumers a reliable way to compare air purifiers using quantifiable data.

The Association of Home Appliance (AHAM) sets the industry standard for air purifier testing.

Air purifiers with large surface area filters and strong fans tend to have the highest CADR ratings. However, CADR has its limitations. Ratings are focused on particle removal rather than gas removal. CADR doesn't consider the noise level and is only for the highest fan speed.
